A must-read list
-
Must read (extracted from the AR forum):
This 'Must Read' is not exactly a Must-read, but more something you should definitely give a try, when you start reading manga. These ones are most likely accessible enough to make you enjoy reading manga - even when you have never read any :)
I''s - Romance / Drama - For a romance/love story with a lot of drama, this is probably the one you should want to read. A loser who falls in love with the prettiest girl in class - but he`s not man enough to show that he likes her. But then things change ...
20th Century Boys - Thriller / Action - Mysterious, interesting, exciting and somehow an incredible desire for more. Realistic, but therefor also scary.
Battle Angel Alita / Gunnm - Action / S-F. Although it`s not the best thing out there, it`s definitely interesting enough for about everyone. Drama, action, blood&gore and even a little bit of romance, together with a nice futuristic view of the earth without becoming really robotic.
Love Hina - Comedy / Romance - One man in a house full of women means comedy, ecchi and romance all around. Classic title, loved by lots of people.
Berserk - Action - You like gore, blood and story? Then you should read this one. Praised by lots of people, this one is definitely your taste.
Hunter x Hunter - Adventure / Fantasy - Full of adventure, action and excitement, this one is the one you want to read if you`re into shounen.
Great Teacher Onizuka - Comedy / Ecchi - A wanna-be gangsta becomes a teacher. Hilarious, ecchi, but also serious at times, Onizuka manages to keep his job with all the foolish, un-adultlike things he does. Although without respect from his own students...
Blade of the Immortal - Samurai / Action / History - Amazing art collides with an intriguing story about revenge. All the characters are very interesting, and are developed good, even the bad guys have a shade of grey.

I think this series may be my "Must-read" :
Chobits - Romance - It tells a story about the possibility of the love between human beings and androids. How would people be if the day when computers become human-shaped? Would people love those human-shaped computer? That is the main idea of "Chobits."
(I feel embarrassed because of my poor English. Maybe there are some eyesore grammar error. I apologize for them first. Orz)

Yeah, its a nice one. Where do you read your manga now? Do you buy it? Or do you use p2p or an online reader?

If you wanna have fun and if you wanna laugh a lot, you must read Ouran High School Host Club and Perfect Girl Evolution. Both of them are very very funny, but also a little romantic (just a little!) and intelligent and sweet (not too much, of course). The main female characters are different (very different!) from the typical shojo manga's main character and this is a good thing (for me, of course), 'cause I don't like all that girly stuff in shojo manga like cryin', unrequited love, blushin' all over, fainting and so on... I hope you can understand my horrible english! ^_^

"Ecole du Ciel" by Haruhiko Mikimoto is an excellent Gundam manga with an original story. The story takes place in the UC time line with an original cast. Haruhiko Mikimoto is also an excellent artist (He is the character designer of the original Macross). The manga is available in English, French and Chinese (I have the Chinese version). The manga is not finished yet and is still on going.
For fans of Rumiko Takashi's Ranma 1/2:
"The One Pound Gospel" and "Maison Ikkoku" are also must read!

Well, I think that for non manga readers, the best way to begin is to see what are their particular interests in order to propose the most appropriate read for them to be hooked.
Anyways, if we do not know the test reader particular tastes, then I think that the 'classics' might be a good point to start.
When I say classics, I am referring to Adachi, Rumiko Takahashi and Tsukasa Hojo, Taniguchi and of course, Osamu Tezuka and Otomo Katsuhiro. Masakazu Katsura could also be a good idea.
As for me the "MUST READ" of the moment are:
- Silver Diamond,
- Nodame Cantabile and Tensai Family Company of Tomoko Ninomiya.
- Team Medical Dragon from Taro Nogisaka
- Say Hello to Black Jack from Suyho Sato
- Otomen from Aya KANNO
- X/1999 from CLAMP
- Trefle Clover from CLAMP
- Himitsu from Shimizu Reiko
- Natsume Juuincho from Yuki Midorikawa
- Skip Beat from Yoshiki Nakamura
among others - Annaynana | Jun 30, 2009 Report abuse
