Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife By Mary Roach

Really enjoyable reading. It's about the ways that science has attempted to prove the existence of an afterlife and/or a soul, but it's mostly about the ways that science has failed.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals By Michael Pollan
  • A really enjoyable look at how the North American food industry ended up the way it is, and what it means for us as individuals and as a community to eat the way we do.

Howl's Moving Castle By Diana Wynne Jones
  • This was a really enjoyable book. I liked it so much better than The Merlin Conspiracy (which is the only other book of Diana Wynn Jones' that I've read), and I'm really glad I picked it up. Next up, braving the movie and hoping the changes don't bother me as much as they bothered friends of mine.

A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen: Easy Seasonal Dishes for Family and Friends By Jack Bishop

This is a gorgeous cookbook. Not nearly enough pictures (there's just one small section of them) but the recipes sound fantastic and the book is scattered with little sidebars of extra information on ingredients and techniques.

The tone is conversational without being condescending. (One of my pet peeves with tv hosts on cooking shows is when they say to use "good" olive oil or "good" cheddar or whatever. Do they think people intentionally buy "bad" cheese and olive oil? Have they considered that some of us can't afford to buy the good stuff from the specialty shop or maybe we live somewhere where the supermarket is the only option. Bishop does talk a fair bit of shit about the supermarket, and he talks up his organic co-op farm, but somehow it doesn't bother me quite so much with him because he does talk about specific brands that work well and explains why he prefers, say, organic canned tomatoes to regular store tomatoes. And that I can take without assumption of condescension much more easily than being told to use "good" canned tomatoes.)

I've been reading this cookbook like a regular book even more than I normally would - it's nice to flip through it page by page and read all the extra notes and commentary that Bishop has added.

Bundles of Fun By Karen Snyder
  • A selection of quilts that use twelve fat-quarters (plus backing and sometimes borders or accent fabrics). They are all at least baby or lap quilt sized, but some are a little larger as well. Most of the quilts are quite simple, but they are lovely.

The Encyclopedia of STITCHES

King Lear: (Oxford School Shakespeare) By Roma Gill, William Shakespeare
  • Rating is for the edition, rather than the play itself. This is my favourite of the various different Shakespeare editions I've ever picked up. It's got a great deal of extra information for the reader, including several summaries (scene by scene, act by act, and an overview of the play).

Matilda By Roald Dahl
The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Silver on the Tree; The Grey King; Greenwitch; The Dark Is Rising; and Over Sea, Under Stone By Susan Cooper
  • This is probably my favourite young adult fantasy series, though Garth Nix's new series The Keys to the Kingdom is really wonderful as well. More well written than Harry Potter, a little less heavy reading than His Dark Materials, less silly than Artemis Fowl.

Life of Pi By Yann Martel
  • So many people liked it and liked it so much that I thought I'd be disappointed when I read it simply because it was so built up in my head. I enjoyed it though.
