Black Holes, Wormholes & Time Machines By Jim Al-Khalili
  • This is by far the best physics book I have read. I now finally understand Einstein's theories and can even start to explain higher dimensional maths using the really good examples given in the book. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to understand what those mad physicists are up to.

The Stone Canal: A Fall Revolution Novel By Ken MacLeod
  • By far the best MacLeod book I have read so far. A must-read for fans of Virtual Reality, AI and the Singularity. Add a gripping plot and believable, complex characters to these SF themes and you get an absolute winner. Read it, read it, read it.

Bones, Rocks and Stars: The Science of When Things Happened By Chris Turney
  • I really enjoyed this book. I got exactly what I wanted from it, i.e. a better understanding of the science behind radiocarbon dating and other techniques. Very accessible and full of interesting anecdotes.

Redemption Ark: (Gollancz SF S.) By Alastair Reynolds
  • The third book I read by Reynolds. I'm still impressed by the richness of the Revelation Space universe. The plot in Redemption Ark is a little more epic. I wonder whether the next one will move back to a smaller scale as Chasm City did (in a way). Again, I highly recommend Reynolds' books.

Chasm City By Alastair Reynolds
  • Another great book that reinforces my respect for Alastair Reynolds. I hope the next installment (Redemption Ark) is as good.

Matter By Iain M. Banks

    More Culture goodness

I took my time reading this as I am a huge fan Banks' Culture novels. Matter doesn't disappoint. Suit up, pick up your CREW and go fight some comped Morth-tech guard ships in a 4 dimensional Shellworld's Machine Core.

Dark Light By Ken MacLeod
  • Really enjoying this sequel to Cosmonaut Keep. Some of the ideas feel a little simplistic from time to time and McLeod's use of the present tense is sometimes distracting but overall, this is a very good read, full of very interesting ideas.

    Insane

I thought Banks' Culture series pushed the idea of artificial intelligence to another level but Diaspora's "polis" concept just blows the Culture "Minds" out of the water. A warning though: Diaspora is definitely one for science geeks! Only read it if you don't mind whole chapters describing quantum physics concepts and multi-dimensional mathematics.

I often wandered if it was possible to describe a higher dimensional universe but now I know it can be done (Egan describes a 6-dimensional macrosphere in Diaspora). And so much better than Lovercraft's "it's so weird I go insane" appoach :-)

The Hanging Garden By Ian Rankin
  • That weird slicing feeling

I love Rankin's Rebus series but his style is so dark. Too much razor blades and horrific knife injuries.
