You Must Set Forth at Dawn: A Memoir By Wole Soyinka
  • I have read two of Wole Soyinka's biographical works so far, and they are wonderful portraits of Mr. Soyinka as a writer, a political activist, and a human being. I have read two of Wole Soyinka's biographical works so far, and they are wonderful portraits of Mr. Soyinka as a writer, a political activist, and a human being. I don't think I have ever read books that so much conveyed the author's wit, zest, and love for life and for mankind, even in the face of atrocities that would make lesser men lose heart. I recommend "You Must Set Forth..." as highly as I can recommend any book.

26a By Diana Evans
  • This book was funny, moving, tragic, real, mystical, marvellous. It made me cry; it's been a while since a book did that.

I think that if you like Zadie Smith and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, you'll like this.

I finished reading this book last night, and started again at the first page this morning.

My review of "What is the What" is as follows: you should read it. Seriously.

I think that one of the most interesting things about this book (the author's last before her death earlier this year) is that she has said that it's based on real life experience with a close family member. It's widely believed that the family member in question is her daughter, troubled actress Maia Campbell; reading the book with that in mind made it more affecting and poignant that it might otherwise have been.

I've been running for a few years now, but still consider myself a beginner, and this is the running book I've been looking for for a while. It was informative, practical and motivational. I especially liked that it included information, in the appendices, on how to advance your running past the beginner's stage (running faster and running farther), and that it acknowledges that not everyone who takes up running wants to go on to be a high-performance ultramarathoners.

  • This book felt more like a treatise than a novel. That was its major flaw. A pity, because the combination of story and discourse could have worked and been interesting.
