A charming, delightful, and intellectually stimulating read. The characters are brilliantly drawn with touches of humour that creep through the down-to-earthness of country folk as opposed to the polished character of Lord Peter Wimsey. The one character I really liked is the sweep, Mr Puffett. He is a stout man made stouter by his selection of 'variegated pullovers' that he wore one on top of the other. This, Sayers tells, was known as 'a high degree of onionisation.' As Mr. Puffett sets about his work he is seen to strip off, as various intervals, an onion layer of pullover!
Another fascinating character is the Superintendent, Mr Kirk. Very soon after meeting him at the scene of the crime, Peter Wimsey engages him in a contest to guess the literary quote each makes in the course of the investigation. It is extremely well done!
