Ho iniziato dall’ultimo romanzo, ho proseguito quasi a ritroso, leggendo il terzo della trilogia della pianura poi il primo ed in fine il secondo, ed è stata una fortuna. Ho trovato Le nostre anime di notte un capolavoro mentre non son certa avrei continuato a leggere Haruf avessi iniziato da Canto della pianura che, per certi versi, mi ha ricordato Tre manifesti a Ebbing, Missouri: film e romanzo mi son sembrati frutto di uno sguardo quasi afflitto da un preconcetto, negativo nel film positivo in Haruf, e come nel film il finale lascia uno spiraglio, una speranza di apertura, così in Haruf c’è sempre un riferimento alla cattiveria umana senza che questa riesca mai a prevalere davvero. Ho trovato che questo, per me, eccesso di ottimismo si sia adombrato nel corso dei romanzi contestualmente ad una scrittura che si è fatta via via sempre più rarefatta, precisa ed intensa permettendo di raggiungere quasi la perfezione in Le nostre anime di notte. L’abilità che Haruf ha sin dall’esordio è quella di acciuffarti e letteralmente gettarti nel mondo di Holt, rendetelo quasi familiare e se, a volte, l’umanità dei personaggi può quasi stordire, come può stordire la vista di qualcosa di superlativamente bello, al tempo stesso ci si augura che possa non finire mai tanto che il racconto diventa quasi un rifugio da quanto ci circonda.

Ci affidiamo allo sfumare delle giornate, dall'alba con i campi ancora coperti di brina, ai tramonti pieni di polvere. Non ci sono colpi di scena, non c'è suspense, ma solo esseri umani che si agitano all'interno della quotidianità. E questo è dolcemente straziante.
La trama di Plainsong non e’ nulla di eccezionale, quello che fa di questo libro una lettura eccezionale e’ la forza dei messaggi dietro le “non-parole” (gli abitanti di Holt non sono molto loquaci), poche ma dirette e le descrizioni degli umori dei protagonist, nonche’ le descrizioni dei paesaggi che creano l’atmosfera. Bellissimi personaggi, dai fratelli McPherson all’anziana signora che insegna Ike e Bobby a prepare I biscotti: “You understand? If you can read you can cook. You can always feed yourselves. You remember that.”
...ContinuaA bit slow for my taste; at some times I'm drawn into the stories, but at other times it feels a little dull or lackluster. The story about the pregnant girl was too predictable. I liked reading the story from the two little boys' perspective though. They had a good mix of understanding and innocence about life and death.
